Umbrella Security’s Milestone XProtect Experience
Eight years of documented work designing, testing, integrating, upgrading, and supporting Milestone video management systems for commercial businesses, schools, manufacturers, and government facilities.
Project scenes on this page are illustrative. The experience summaries are anonymized from Umbrella project records; customer names are not used without permission.
Milestone is powerful. The integrator still determines whether it becomes useful.

A record that extends from design meetings to recovery calls
Umbrella’s Milestone history is not one installation repeated. It covers new designs, existing-system evaluations, camera testing, server decisions, licensing, upgrades, identity integration, user adoption, and troubleshooting.
Milestone system work from the first site walk through long-term support
The VMS is only one layer. Umbrella connects it to cameras, networks, servers, storage, user roles, investigations, integrations, and the people responsible for the building.

Train operators and administrators around the work they perform—not every feature the software can display.Upgrades and recovery
Plan maintenance, protect configuration, resolve licensing and service problems, verify cameras afterward, and document the result.
The right starting point is the building—not the software demo
Security, facilities, IT, and operations often describe the same project differently. Security wants coverage and usable evidence. IT wants a supportable network and server design. Facilities wants installability. Leadership wants risk reduction without unnecessary complexity. Umbrella’s job is to reconcile those requirements before they become change orders, weak coverage, short retention, or an administration burden. These examples are drawn from Umbrella records. They are anonymized because private project correspondence is evidence of experience—not automatic permission to identify a customer publicly.
Testing multi-sensor and panoramic cameras before purchase
For a project approaching 100 cameras, Umbrella tested representative devices in a controlled environment before the full purchase. The work examined motion recording, stitched views, per-lens behavior, supported drivers, device naming, and licensing questions. Why it mattered: a model can appear on a compatibility list and still require design decisions about channels, views, analytics, recording, and licensing.
Designing around more than 80 sensors from several manufacturers
One design included Hanwha, Arecont, Samsung, and analog video through an encoder. Umbrella compared on-premises XProtect Professional+, cloud, and hybrid directions while sizing around resolution, frame rate, motion percentage, retention, and RAID. Why it mattered: “open” is valuable when it protects a good existing investment. It becomes risky when compatibility is assumed instead of tested.
Building the recording platform around real retention and growth
Umbrella’s project work includes recording-server expansion, usable-storage planning, RAID considerations, stream assumptions, camera counts, and future headroom. Those details determine whether footage exists when an incident is reviewed weeks later. Why it mattered: camera resolution alone does not answer bandwidth, disk throughput, redundancy, archive, or recovery questions.
Restoring a system made unusable by a licensing problem
In 2026, Umbrella remotely resolved a manufacturing customer’s XProtect server and licensing failure, updated the software, completed license activation, and followed through after service returned. Why it mattered: the real value of an integrator becomes clear when the system cannot wait for a new sales cycle.
Commercial and public facilities with different reasons for using video
The same software can support very different operating goals. The design should begin with the incident, decision, or business process the buyer needs video to improve.
Schools and campuses
Multi-building visibility, investigations, user access, web or client workflows, retention, and coordination with district IT.Municipal and government
Public-building coverage, evidence handling, interview-room requirements, lifecycle planning, and accountable procurement.Manufacturing and industrial
Perimeter, production, shipping, safety, operational review, Active Directory, and existing cameras. Confirm support coverage and any after-hours arrangements before work begins.Commercial properties
Entrances, parking, tenant or employee incidents, remote visibility, manageable administration, and future expansion.
Show the workflow the buyer will own
A polished demonstration can make almost any VMS look easy. Umbrella prefers role-based evaluation: ask an operator to find a camera, investigate a realistic incident, export evidence, respond to an alarm, and recognize a device or recording failure. Administrators should also see how users, permissions, cameras, storage, updates, and health are managed. That is closer to ownership than watching a manufacturer’s ideal demo.Questions that protect the project after the proposal is signed
The best Milestone partner is not simply the company that can obtain a license. Ask who owns each operating risk.
