What happened

In a statement posted September 3, the City of Edgewood said the Flock camera system would remain inactive during a review by the City Council, department heads and city staff. Officials plan to examine current policies and practices, consider resident feedback and decide whether stronger procedures or safeguards are appropriate.

The city identified privacy, information collection and retention, access, sharing and potential misuse as issues that deserve review. It also emphasized that the pause is not a decision to abandon the technology or reduce support for the police department. Officials cited investigative assistance, stolen-vehicle recovery and crime deterrence as potential benefits.

Why local leaders should care

Edgewood is creating space to examine the rules before choosing a long-term direction. That distinction matters. A community can preserve useful investigative capability while still requiring clear local authority over retention, access, sharing, audits and contract exit rights.

What remains undecided

The city has not announced whether it will restart the current system, change its policy, seek another approach or end the program. No replacement vendor, contract value or procurement schedule is public.

Questions to ask during the review

  • Who authorizes searches, and how is a valid public-safety purpose documented?
  • How long is data retained, and can the city enforce automatic deletion?
  • Is outside sharing disabled unless the city gives specific approval?
  • Can independent reviewers understand and export the complete audit history?
  • What deletion and portability rights apply when the agreement ends?

Keep the safety value under community control.
